Ex-Finance Minister, P Chidambaram will today walk out of Tihar jail. After spending 105 days in jail, today he was granted bail by Supreme Court in the INX Media money laundering case. The apex court bench comprising Justices R Banumathi, AS Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy pronounced the verdict.
P Chidambarm was lodged at Tihar jail on 21st August. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Banumathi granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh with two sureties of the like amount and also asked him to surrender his passport. Chidambaram cannot leave the country without the prior permission of the court and cannot give media interviews or statements with regard to INX Media Case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta arguing in for ED said that granting a bail to former minister would send a wrong signal society. He said that the economic offences committed by him affected the national economy. People would surmise that economic offences, which were a class apart, committed by persons who occupied high offices were viewed with a “permissive eye” by the court.
Soon after P Chidambaram was granted bail, the very first to react was his son Karti Chidambaram. In his twitter handle he posted, “Phew. At last after 106 days :)”
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra taking a dig at Congress party posted, “Classic case of @INCIndia ‘Celebrating Corruption’!! So finally Chidambaram too joins the long list of OOBC(Out On Bail Club) in the Congress ..He joins the coveted Club, some members of which are:1)Sonia Gandhi 2)Rahul Gandhi 3)Robert Vadra 4)Motilal Vohra 5)Bhupinder Hooda 6)Sashi Tharoor Etc Etc,”
It must be noted that the Delhi High Court had, on November 15, dismissed his bail plea. P Chidambaram sought bail in a case pertaining to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of ₹305 crore in 2007 during his tenure as the finance minister. However, On November 28, Supreme Court had reserved the order on the bail petition filed by former finance minister P Chidambaram.
P Chidambaram was arrested by the ED in the INX Media money laundering case on October 16. On October 22nd he was granted bail by Supreme Court with respect to case registered by CBI. Both CBI and ED had registered separate case against him in respect to INX deal.
