The Unoin Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Citizenship Amendment Bill. The Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the bill will be introduced in Parliament in day or two.
What is Citizenship Amendment Bill?
The Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Amendment Act of 1955. As per the provisions:
Exception in the Bill
Will the Government be Able to Pass the Bill?
CAB was introduced in Lok Sabha earlier this year. It faced no hurdle and was passed easily. However, due to protests against the bill in north-eastern part of India, the government did not introduce it in Rajya Sabha. However, this time the government has come up with exceptions in the Bill.
BJP enjoys overwhelming majority in Lok Sabha, therefore it will not face any difficult in the lower house. In Rajya Sabha, though BJP is the single largest party, its alliance NDA still lacks majority. Its old ally, Shiv Sena too may vote against the bill in both the house, therefore BJP may face difficulty in passing it in the Upper House.
The Left Front, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, DMK and some regional parties including Naveen Patnaik’s BJD have opposed the bill. The opposition is hoping to create an anti-government front that may include BJP’s old ally Shiv Sena in Rajya Sabha. Even if the bill is passed in Lok Sabha, it may not see the “light of life” in Rajya Sabha. However, none can deny the political engineering of BJP since it came back to power once again. Be it Triple Talaq Bill or the Abrogation of Article 370, despite having no majority it was successful in passing both the bills in Rajya Sabha too.
