The BJP government in Karnataka is set to survive after todays by-election result. As per Election Commission of India website, BJP is comfortably leading in 12 of the 15 assembly seats. BJP which has 105 MLAs in Karnataka assembly present, required 6 MLAs to keep its government alive in the state.
After Maharashtra setback for BJP, the opposition had set their eyes upon Karnataka. BJP failing to win 6 seats would have led to CoJa 2.0 in the state. However, as per the trends, it is clear that BJP will comfortably sail through the by-polls test. Congress on the other hand is leading on 2 seats while an independent, Sharath Bachegowda, BJP rebel is leading in Hosakote seat. The by-election result is turning out to be nightmare for former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s JD(s). The party seems to be losing deposit on most of the seats that it contested.
It must be noted that 12 of the 15 assembly seats were held by Congress and 3 by JD(s). After the Supreme Court relief, BJP had fielded all the rebel MLAs. The by-poll which was conducted on 5th December witnessed 67.91 percent polling. For BJP these by-polls were of utmost importance. Since 2018, BJP had lost 4 important states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra. Losing Karnataka would have led to beginning of downfall of BJP.
Reacting to the positive result for BJP in Karnataka bypolls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said people of the state have declared that Congress and JDS will not be able to betray them. He said that the people of Karnataka have opted for a firm government instead of a questionable coalition.
After the trends being in favour of BJP, CM BS Yediyurappa said, "Eleven MLAs will get cabinet berth out of the 12 winning candidates. Ranebennur BJP candidate wasn't promised anything and I don't see any problem with all 11 becoming ministers. In the next 3-4 days I'll go to Delhi and finalise everything."
As per the ECI website, BJP has already won 2 seats, Vijaynagara and Hirekerur and is leading on 10 assembly seats. The independent candidate, Sharath Bachegowda who is leading in Hasakote is likely to join back BJP.
