On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern, Nirbhaya, was gang raped while travelling in a bus with her friend. Eleven days after the assault, she was shifted to hospital in Singapore where she gave up her fight for life. Six man namely, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Mohammad Afroz, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur and Ram Singh were involved in committing the heinous crime that bought the entire humanity to shame.
Ram Singh reportedly hanged himself in jail while the juvenile named Mohammad Afroz was released after 3 years of punishment. 7 years since the incident the family of Nirbhaya along with entire nation have been waiting for justice. On December 6, when the Hyderabad rape and murder accused were encountered on the same day the Home Ministry had rejected the mercy plea of one Vinay Sharma in Nirbhaya case. The file was forwarded to President for his final decision.
Speaking at a event in Rajasthan, President Ram Nath Kovind said that there should be no mercy for rapists convicted under POCSO Act. The President said, "Women safety is a serious issue. Rape convicts under the POCSO Act should not have the right to file mercy petition. Parliament should review mercy petitions."
The Union Home Ministry had forwarded a mercy plea file to the President. The Home Ministry has also commented in the file recommending the rejection of the mercy petition of one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case. Thus, it was clear that the mercy plea filed by one of the convicts was going to be rejected by the President too.
Notably, a convict is hanged after 14 days of rejection of mercy petition. It is reported that all four convicts in the Nirbhaya case have been shifted to Tihar, triggering speculation that they would be hanged soon. A jail in Buxar district of Bihar, known for its expertise in manufacturing execution ropes, has been directed to keep 10 pieces ready by the end of this week.
There has been indication that the 7-year-old Nirbhaya case could soon reach closure. After the Hyderabad convicts were encountered a protest demanding justice for Nirbhaya rocked the nation. After both Delhi Government and the Home Ministry recommending the mercy petition to be rejected speculations are high that the convicts could be hanged in a week or two.
