AIADMK which has 11 Rajya Sabha Members is set to support Citizenship Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha. AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP Thirumathi Vijila Sathyanath said that he supports the bill however asked the government for additional protection for Tamil Refugees from Sri Lanka.
Tamil Nadu Minister and AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said that the Bill is not against Sri Lankan Tamils and Tamil Nadu. We support the CAB in Parliament. With AIADMK support, the tally of NDA in Rajya Sabha rises to 116, 5 short of majority mark. Besides, NDA has received the support of Naveen Patnaik’s BJD. BJD has 7 MPs in Rajya Sabha.
It must be noted that, AIADMK and BJD had supported the ruling government on several occasion in Rajya Sabha. However, the move of AIADMK has been questioned by DMK the other Tamil party. DMK slammed AIADMK for supporting the bill which does not include the Tamil refugee from the island nation Sri Lanka. On Monday in Lok Sabha, DMK MPs worked away out after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was tabled. Sri Sri Ravishankar also urged Centre to include the Tamil refugees in the bill.
Since Lok Sabha passed the bill the north-eastern state of Assam has been on boil. Today the protest intensified. From Dibrugarh to Guwahati, the protestors have directly clashed with the police. Around 25 protestors have been injured, army have been called out to push the protesters. However, at the regional parties like Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples’ Front have supported the government in Rajya Sabha.
With the support of regional parties, Citizenship Amendment Bill is set to pass in Rajya Sabha too. With the assent of President, the Bill will become a law. However, there is no doubt that the bill will be challenged in Supreme Court. The ones opposing the bill are of the opinion that the Supreme Court of India will surely strike down the bill as it is against the secular fabric of nation. They believe that the bill even violates the Article 14 of Indian Constitution.
