A Delhi Court will be hearing the quantum of punishment for the Unnao rape convict Kuldeep Sengar. On Monday, Delhi Court convicted ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for rape of woman in Unnao in 2017.
The Court have convicted Kuldeep Sengar for rape under Indian Penal Code and POCSO act. The rape survivor was a minor when she was assulted.
On Friday, December 20, Delhi court will hear the quantum of punishment to convict Kuldeep Sengar. CBI has sought maximum punishment and also demanded adequate compensation for the rape survivor.
The Case was initially pursed by Uttar Pradesh police. However, alleging the inaction of police, the victim approached Allahabad High Court in February last year. Days later the UP government transferred the case to CBI.
The Counsel appearing for Kuldeep Sengar urged the court to give minimum punishment as he has no past criminal record. Advocate Tanveer Ahmed Mir, appearing for the Convict said, "He had a political career without any blemish. Since 2002-till date he has been elected repeatedly as a member of the legislative assembly by the public."
It must be noted that since the case, the rape survivor lost her father, her two aunts. Sengar, a four-time BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Bangarmau, had raped the girl at his residence in Unnao in June 2017, where she had gone seeking a job.
After the rumour of Nirbhaya rape accused to be hanged, people are demanding similar punishment in the case of Unnao too. On Friday it will be clear the extent of punishment that court will be awarding Kuldeep Sengar, an ex- BJP MLA.
