Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on born on 2 October 1869 to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai Gandhi

At age 9, Gandhi entered the local school in Rajkot, near his home in Gujarat

In late 1885, Gandhi's father Karamchand died. Gandhi was then 16 years old and his wife Kasturba Gandhi was of age 17. At the time of death of Gandhi's father his wife had their first baby, who survived only a few days

Gandhi graduated from high school in Ahmedabad in year 1887. In 1888 Gandhi moved to London to study law. Gandhi joined the University College London and was called to the bar in 1891

Between 1893 and 1914 Gandhi spent time in South Africa. In 21 years he accomplished a lot-

- He helped form the Natal Indian Congress in 1894

- He Volunteered as a stretcher bearer during the Boer War in 1900

- Gandhi ji launched his first version of the Satyagraha in 1906

At the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale he returned to India in 1915 and began involving himself in the freedom movement

In a few years Gandhi became the foremost voice of the Indian Independence movement until the end of British rule in 1945. Over the next 30 years, Mahatma Gandhi used a variety of methods, some successful, some which were failures to persuade the British to leave India. By 1935, the British initiated a process to begin reducing their direct rule in India by passing the Government of India act. But the act was no considered adequate and Gandhi once again led protests against the British

The British finally left India in blood in August 1947. 5 months later an assassin killed Gandhi in New Delhi. The circumstances that led to his death still make Gandhi a source of anger for many who lost their loved ones during partition. Many others remain upset with Gandhi over partition itself, his influence on Nehru and many such issues

But Gandhi remains the most towering of 20th century leaders. He remains a man who still inspires many to stand for what is right. Gandhi is regarded as the father of the nation in India. India celebrates Gandhi ji's birth anniversary as national holiday

A little known fact is that Gandhi was the president of the Indian National Congress between 1924 and 1925
